Creators Blog Series
Like so many others our life has been turned upside by the Covid 19 pandemic.
After living in the UK for just over 10 months, we were just about to move to Bristol when the 2nd lockdown began. Seeing this as not the ideal time to find a house and work etc we decided to leave and see out the whole virus situation on the island of Tenerife. We hope to return in the new year.
Creativity is always key to our lives, and essentially over the past year after being starved of gigs and with all of our electronic gear in the UK, we are left here on the island with tap shoes, a guitar our voices, bodies for body percussion & a video camera.
So we have decided to take this pandemic as a positive creative opportunity and that these things we have with us and these things alone will make up the premise for a project titled 'Soapbox 21'.
With so many months of introspection across the lockdown period, we have both found ideas and words have flowed with many lyrics taking on a darkly humourous and at times nostalgic look at the political and societal situation in the here and now.
We aim to mix the songs with documentary shorts which explore some of the themes the songs take on.
As the project is very much in the seed stage we thought it would be interesting to share in a blog format how songs and ideas grow, evolve or not as it could it be! Sign Up to our mailing list for monthly updates or go one better and get involved with the Forum where we will be exploring the themes of the songs further.
Here we go - Soapbox 21!
14/1/2021 - Path of Resistance
We begin the 'Soapbox 21' blog with new song 'Path of Resistance'.
The past month we have been back in the UK hibernating in Shrewton near Salisbury at my parents waiting to take on work in Essex.
It's been a period of practicing and rehearsal for us and making sense of the many songs we have written in Tenerife and how we wish to proceed with them.
One thing is for sure the spanish guitar is set to stay, as after the death of my old guitar of 20 years and around 2 years of trying to find a new one that feels right, this guitar finally does and brings a new flavour to the music. Enjoy the song!
25/1/2021 - Someone Else's Hands
Someone Else's Hands is one of those songs that just seemed to fall out the sky fully formed and all you had to do was catch it.
It was written in less than 10 minutes and is most certainly I suppose based on emotions around the pandemic and frustration at some appalling decisions that seem purely to have been made on basis of gaining some kind of short term popularity when all evidence suggests another decision would have been wiser.
Some words are also inspired by the work of @georgemonbiot
